The Diamond Five
Cees formed this legendary band in 1958. The members were Cees Smal, trumpet and valve trombone, Harry Verbeke tenorsax,
Jacques Schols, double bass and John Engels, drums.
The Diamond Five became a firstclass hard-bop combo. Their home was the nightclub Sheherazade, which they owned for some time,
and here they played four years six days a week.
Stan Getz, Quincy Jones, Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Benny Bailey and Charlie Rouse were their guests if they were in town.
There are several EP’s, LP’s and CD’s of this band over the years.
In 1962 they received the prestigious “Edison” award for two Poll Winners EP’s.
Frits Kaatee
Cees has played three years, from 1976 – 1979, in the band of Frits Kaatee with Frits, reeds
Koos van der Sluis on double bass, later replaced by Fred Pronk, and Henk Rijnberg on drums.
the singer of the group was Jeanette Cordee.
Just in Case
This band was formed in 1978, At first as a quintet with Ferdinand Povel on tenor and flute, Bart van Lier on trombone, Henk Haverhoek, double bass and Hans Beths on drums.
Henk was replaced by Jacques Schols and later by Fred Pronk, Hans was replaced by Peter Ypma.
After some time the band became a sextet because Dusko Goykovich on trumpet was added.
In 2006 a 2nd edition was formed with Paul Berner double bass and Eric Ineke on drums and
Ack van Rooyen in stead of Dusko.
Piet Noordijk/ Cees Slinger Kwartet
In 1979 Piet and Cees formed together this band. Rob Langereis played double bass and
Evert Overweg drums. They recorded the LP “Loverman”.
Het Cees Slinger Octet
In 1982 Cees formed this band for the radioprogramme TROS Sesjun, a weekly live radio show.
The frontline is: Dusko Goykovich, trumpet, Ruud Brink, tenor, Ferdinand Povel, alto, Cees Smal, trombone
Herman Schoonderwalt, baritone sax. Jacques Schols played double bass and Cees Kranenburg drums.
(CD – Live at the North Sea Jazz Festival).
In 1983 the band toured in California.
Het Cees Slinger Octet 2nd Edition
In 1995 the octet has a revival with Niels Tausk on trumpet, Ferdinand Povel on tenor,
Carolyn Breuer on alto- and sopranosax, Bart van Lier on trombone, Juan Martinez on baritone sax,
Marius Beets on double bass and Joost Patocka on drums.
Soesja Citroen
Starting 1982 Cees is the steady accomponist of Soesja Citroen. The members of the quintet are Fred Leeflang,
tenor, Jan Voogd double bass and Martin van Duynhoven, later Arnoud Gerritse on drums.
They worked again together in a 2nd period 1987 – 1995. Several LP’s and CD’s are recorded.
Bart van Lier
Cees is the pianoplayer and arranger in the 4 trombone group “Bart’s Bones”.
The ‘Bones’ are Bart van Lier, Martijn Sohier, Bert Boeren and bastrombonplayer Erik van Lier.

Silvia Droste
With the German singer Silvia Droste Cees has during many years visited clubs and festivals in Germany
and even in Romania. With Martin Wind or Ingmar Heller on double bass and Hans Dekker or Jo Krause on drums.
The CD “Duke’s Sound of Love” was recorded in 1998.
Silvia also sang a program of Cedar Walton compositions with the Cees Slinger Octet.
Buddies in Soul
This band was formed in 1997. Simon Rigter told Cees that he wanted to start a band with him
‘cause Cees had played with Simon’s idols, such as Ben Webster, Johnny Griffin, Dexter Gordon, etc.
Although Cees told Simon that he could be his father Simon persisted and a new band was quickly born.
They called it “Buddies In Soul” and chose Ruud Breuls on trumpet, Stefan Lievestro
later Johan Plomp on double bass and Joost Patocka on drums.
They recorded in 2002 the CD “Happy Times”. Singer Joke Bruijs was many times their guest.
Greetje Kauffeld
With Greetje Kauffeld Cees has worked since 1959. They even sang a Christmas duet together on television!
Many times Greetje has been the guest-singer with The Diamond Five. (LP – “Back Together”)
In 2002 they recorded together with Ferdinand Povel, Paul Berner and Jo Krause the CD “Devil May Care”.
For JazzImpuls Cees en Greetje did a theater-tour in 2007.
Two Tenor Case
The start of this band is called a “telephone-band”. Because another band had cancelled out in Kijkduin for a
closing evening Cees was asked to help out. Simon Rigter on tenor, Sjoerd Dijkhuizen on tenor, Frans van Geest
on double bass and Eric Ineke on drums were available, it turned out to be a perfect match and Two Tenor Case
existed. In 2002 the CD “Slide Hampton meets Two Tenor Case: Callitwhachawana” was recorded.
Three Tenor Case
On the occasion of the 75th birthday of Cees in 2004 Ferdinand Povel was added as third saxophonist.
Also with this group many clubs were visited.
Cees Slinger Trio
There have been many editions of a “Cees Slinger Trio”.
Many times with Jacques Schols or James Long on double bass and John Engels or Jo Krause on drums.
The last one in 2007 with Paul Berner on double bass and Ben Schröder on drums.
